If you’re reading the newbie’s guide to Ethereum mining and have a GPU that’s powerful enough to make it worthwhile, we’re going to assume you’re running Windows, so we’ll focus on mining Zcash on that platform.

I’ve a question, I have a 700W Power supply(non modular) , and currently a gtx 1080 and one gtx 1060 3GB. So the miner shows that I’m using about 200W for this gtx, if I connect one more gtx 1060 3GB and I start the miner, it shows errors like it hasn’t enought power, and the last gpu stops running but the fan go 100%.

Next, you will have to ensure you have the correct virtual memory enabled (minimum 16GB). To do this, search for system in the start menu. Open system and on the left hand side click ‘Advanced System Settings.’ Go under the advanced tab, under performance settings, and advanced again. Then click ‘Change’ under virtual memory. Uncheck the box that states to ‘Automatically manage paging file size for all drives’ and then input a custom size of 16384 (or whatever is the maximum allowable value up to 16GB) into the Initial and Maximum size fields. This will prevent you from having any errors with virtual memory.

Before we begin, it is important to note that the responsibility of mining rests only with the miners themselves. Configure the mining software (usually via batch file) to point to your desired pool and mine to your wallet address, as well as any GPU specific options you may need (or want) to enable (if supported).

After letting your newly setup miner run for about 20-30 minutes, you can check the pool to confirm you shares are being counted and see some pool-side statistic of your mining progress. Advantages: It does seem to be a bit less on hardware — power usage is a bit lower. You can watch YouTube HD videos without chopping while Bminer works, and it will dial down hash rate to accommodate this. DSTM and EBWF usually make watching videos or working on spreadsheets uncomfortable to impossible.

Keep in mind that Equihash makes CPU mining still somewhat feasible for Zcash. However, you’ll mostly receive a better RoI with GPU investments, so consider the options above first before exploring your CPU options.

Install your GPU drivers as you normally would and reboot. You’ll know your GPU has been recognized correctly if you go to Device Manager (search it in Windows search bar) and you don’t see any warning marks on your GPUs. They should look like this:

Ah, I see. Malware seem to be a huge problem on this forum. I took a look for a description to setup a VM quickly. It seems it not that easy. PCI/GPU-Passthrough seems to be very hardware dependent – not that easy to setup. I’ve really no good idea how to provide security for you, without opening the source. If you are a beginner you should know how to install and use this software. This software takes benefit of your CPU to mine. You can also build a dedicated GPU rig for mining the basic software but this is not sufficient. You should decide on software that optimizes to take profit of your GPU.

It is no secret that AMD holds a solid leadership position in the world of cryptocurrency mining. After our extremely popular Monero mining series, which works well on AMD GPUs and Intel/ AMD CPUs, we started looking for a cryptocurrency mining application for NVIDIA GPUs. We re-discovered Zcash mining.

For a solid budget card, the Nvidia 1060 with 6 GB of RAM is recommended (when in stock and not ridiculously overpriced due to the card shortages we’ve been seeing in summer 2017). This GPU will beat the AMD 480s when it comes to mining Zcash!

Transaction Fees   This is a small, optional fee attached to a Bitcoin transfer. Upon the completion of all 21 million bitcoins being created, these fees will provide the reward to encourage miner to continue mining and verifying the network transactions.

The dstm’s ZCash Nvidia Miner is supposed to be slightly faster than the popular and widely used EWBF’s CUDA Zcash miner that has not been updated for quite some time, so you might want to give the new miner a try. Our initial tests show a bit better hashrate with the same GPU settings as with the EWBF, though the difference is not huge. Do note that dstm’s miner has its own specifics that you need to get used with such as the use of a separate thread for each GPU and getting 6 separate workers on the pool from one mining rig for example. The interface could also use some improvements and some color coding can further help in readability, but in general it is quite Ok even at the moment. Do note that the 64-bit Windows binary is built with Visual Studio 2015, so if you do not have the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 installed you might get an error about a missing DLL.

For this reason, miners started to work in groups, which are called pools. A pool of miners unites the calculation power of a workforce of small miners in order to obtain a significant mining power (aka hash rate), thus increasing the chance of solving a puzzle and getting the reward for it. Each miner in the pool, gets a “share” of the reward, according to the amount of power he contributed to the pool.

You can also start mining process with your GPU. You can use claymore as it has a long standing reputation and optimized for miners. It helps improve the hashing rate and sometimes it takes time download and use. If you are going to use Genoil miner then it is going to work for pool mining and with AMD graphic cards.  The miner may charge 2.5% fee and the every hour miner mines for developer during 3 minutes.

As solving these mathematical puzzles had become difficult, mining pools are being used. A mining pool is a joint effort between miners, so that even a miner with a relatively small amount of processing power can enjoy the reward, without having to solve the whole mathematical puzzle by himself, as it requires a lot of computing power (Hash rate). In the early days of Bitcoin, it was possible to mine Bitcoin with a standard processor of a personal computer (CPU mining). Afterwards, as the network grew bigger, the difficulty of solving these puzzles grew too, and it was no longer possible to mine using a CPU. For this reason, people shifted to using powerful “gamers” graphics card processes (GPU mining), as their design solves those puzzles much faster than a CPU. The next step was to shift over to ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits which are basically dedicated machines built for the sole purpose of mining). Today, Bitcoin’s network is so heavy, that nobody can mine Bitcoin by themselves. As an individual miner’s power is relatively small, he will probably not be able to solve any puzzle before other more powerful miners do and new puzzles are issued, resulting in wasted work which practically gives zero income (in theory, an individual can solve a puzzle by themselves, but with Bitcoin the chances of success are smaller than winning the lottery).

Zcash uses a different hashing algorithm than Bitcoin’s, making it incompatible with the special hashing hardware (ASICs) developed for Bitcoin mining. Zcash’s algorithm is known as Equihash. It’s a memory-hard algorithm; it’s designed to resist the development of Zcash-mining ASICs. Instead, Equihash is deliberately best suited for GPU mining.

For those who may be unfamiliar, Pascal is the code name for Nvidia’s latest micro-architecture which includes all GeForce 10 (10xx) series cards, such as the GTX 1050, GTX 1060, GTX 1070, GTX 1080, the Ti variants as well as Titian X and Xp cards. So basically the miner is optimized for Nvidia 10 series cards, but should still work with most Nvidia cards that have at least 1 GB of on-board memory and Compute 2.0 or higher capabilities.

Since we included –api you can monitor the miner with a web browser as opposed to the command/terminal window. On the mining rig, navigate to 127.0.0.1:42000 in a web browser. You should see a screen like the one below.
